Severed Remains - A Display of Those Defiled (2003)

Severed Remains are a pretty obscure brutal death band with only one full-length album released before they split up, this being it. It's a very interesting blend of Devourment's primitive groove and Suffocation's technicality and unpredictable song structures. It includes a cover of Suffo's well-known song 'Liege of Inveracity' which is not bad but it isn't really interesting since I don't think the 'Effigy' version can be outclassed, but it's not bad either. The rest is varies: the first song, 'Prelude To Dementia' is over seven minutes (and still not the longest track on the album!); it starts off with a riff that closely resembles Devourment's 'Shroud of Encryprion' and progresses towards Suffocation/Disgorge style brute tech with occasional groove-ridden slams and breakdowns. The rest is pretty similar with a few surprises - melodies, acoustic interludes - scattered around. Highly recommended for brutal death fans looking for an interesting and varied approach to the style.
